This week before Christmas, at least three people are dead in New Orleans and dozens are injured following a storm system that unleashed at least 50 tornadoes in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, leveling thousands of homes and leaving tens of thousands of people in the dark. The same system has slung ice at several eastern states as it climbs northward, and is expected to dump as much as 1-2 inches of snow per hour in parts of New York this weekend. In the Upper Midwest, blizzards with fierce winds knocked down power lines, leaving tens of thousands in freezing weather without electricity.
Lord, please protect those in danger. Provide for their needs, give them shelter and keep them warm and safe. Comfort those who mourn. Be near to those whose lives and livelihoods have been devastated by the tornadoes and lead them to find their hope in You. Provide for their needs in a way they will know it is You. Rebuild their lives and homes, and bring loving Christians alongside them to help them and to share your Good News in the midst of their hardship. For those who have been running from You, but now find themselves with no roof over their head and nothing to stand on, give them a deep hunger that drives them to return to You. Open their eyes to see Your greatness and love, their ears to hear Your voice calling them to You, their minds to discern Truth from lies, and their hearts to yearn for the more they were created for (John 10:10). When they cry out to You, answer them, Lord, in powerful ways. Bring Christians to them to show them hospitality and love them into Your arms. Call out churches to provide for the needs of those who are suffering and to help them rebuild. Send Christian counselors to help those affected by trauma to healing and freedom. And save the lost, O Lord. Awaken hearts to Your love and grace. Bring forth something beautiful from out of every tragedy like only You can (Romans 8). Abundantly bless Christians who have lost homes or businesses, and rebuild what was lost in such a beautiful, even miraculous way that they will speak of Your goodness, love, comfort and provision all the days of their lives, and many lost who hear will be drawn to the God of Love and Miracles. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
